Sinopsis

At eternity’s gate nos muestra los últimos años de la vida de Vincent Van Gogh, su aislamiento en el pueblo de Arles y como no encaja en ninguna parte mientras desciende lenta pero horriblemente en la locura y pasión de su arte no comprendido por la gente de la época. Ante todo Vincent demostrará que él antes que nada es pintor y nada podrá impedirle realizar lo que más ama y hace sentir realmente vivo.

Elementos

Esta película se refuerza mucho en la imagen mostrando colores cálidos y brillantes hasta opacos y fríos, acompañado de una cámara en constante movimiento que sigue a los personajes haciéndole sentir al espectador que está percibiendo el mundo desde los ojos de Van Gogh y sus estados de ánimo.

 A su vez se usa los primeros planos, enfocándose en los rostros de quienes hablan al protagonista y reciben sus respuestas, una forma de ver cómo las palabras de los demás afecta al artista y a su vez como él recibe lo que se le dice, esto lo transforma en poesía como motivación a seguir creando arte. La utilización de planos generales aparte de mostrar hermosos paisajes que inspiran la mente de Van Gogh, también sirven de referencia a la inmensa soledad que sentía el artista y aún así en estos momentos es cuando más observaba la belleza en su entorno. Se usa un POV (Point Of View) distorsionado que puede simbolizar los ataques de ira del artista así como sus estados de ebriedad en donde comete actos de violencia que luego no recuerda, en estos mismos se observa que la parte inferior del cuadro se ve borrosa, mientras que la superior se aprecia bien y hasta entra brillo, tal vez significando la desconexión que siente el artista con lo terrenal y su lucha por encontrar la iluminación y la inmortalidad a través de sus cuadros.

Conclusión

Una película llena de pasión e ira que Willem daFoe interpreta increíblemente, logra transmitir la locura, la frustración y el dolor de amar algo que te hace sentir vivo y al no ser entendido, sentirte solo en un mundo lleno de belleza. Nos enseña que el arte está ahí afuera, en el camino que transitamos todos los días, en el cantar de las aves y lo que diferencia los artistas de los demás, es que ellos se detienen a apreciar, a observar y a escuchar todas estas historias que pasan frente a los ojos ciegos y a su manera, tratan de relatarla para deleitar con los maravillosos misterios que nos perdemos de la vida.

At eternity’s gate shows the last years in Van Gogh’s life, his isolation at Arles and how he doesn’t fit nowhere while falling slowly and horribly in madness because of the intense passion for his not understood art by the people in those times. Vincent will prove that he first of all is a painter and nothing will stop him achieving what he loves the most and makes him feel truly alive. 

The movie takes force from the images showing warm and brightening colours so as cold and blue. Matching in a non-stopping camera which follows the characters making the viewer feel that is perceiving the world from Van Gogh’s eyes and his moods. 

 At the same time medium close-ups are used to emphasize how the words affects the characters so as Van Gogh changes what people want to say into motivation to keep doing art. On the other hand extreme long-shots are used to show the world behind Vincent’s eyes, how the world could be beautiful for those who knows appreciate it, but it. also proves the tremendous loneliness that the artist felt. A distorted POV (Point Of View) is used as well as a symbol of the artist’s fits of anger and drunken states, where he couldn’t remember what he had done. The lower part of the screen is blurred while the upper is clear-cutted, a image that symbolize the disconnection that the artist felt with earthly and how his mind was illuminated seeking for immortality through his paintings.  

Van Gogh At Eternity’s Gate is full of passion and anger performed incredibly by Williem Dafoe who accomplishes transmitting madness, frustration and pain of loving something that makes you feel alive and not being understood, feel alone in a world full of beauty. It teaches us that art is out there, to never give up, what we love doing should never be stopped by people who doesn’t understand our minds.
